Canon 430EXII with Vivitar 728AF - best setup?
Hi there, I've got a 7D and a Canon 430 EXII flash. I'm going to be getting a Vivitar 728AF (for free), and I have a question about the best way to set this up.
I'm not against using wires.
My thoughts were to get a hot shoe optical slave for the Vivitar and use the 430 to trigger it (itself being triggered from my 7D).
Questions:
1) Will that work?
2a) If I wanted to do away with using the 7D's pop up (it tends to struggle with recycle time after a while), I could get a PC sync cord - but where would I plug it in? The 430 doesn't have a slot for it. 2b) Would I need to get a hot shoe adapter with a pc sync slot for the 430?
Thanks in advance!

It won't work, unless you plug the sync cord in your 7d

1) if you're talking about firing the 430EX in the hotshoe of the 7D and the 430 is set to Manual not TTL then yes, it'll work. If you use a radio trigger to fire the 430 in M mode yes it will work. If you try any TTL or triggering via the pop-up even in M mode then no it wouldn't.

I'd suggest looking into radio triggers. It's so freeing. It's also piece of mind knowing that you won't trip over a wire and send your 7D crashing to the ground or send your 430 to the floor.

Have you considered using wireless flash triggers?
No TTL capability though but great for allowing full control of flashes off camera. Works on the 2.4g frequency so line of sight not required
