Having kids of different ages at home means having an assortment of sports equipment and gear that they may only use seasonally. If you and your spouse are also into sports, both of you will have various pieces of athletic equipment that will also add to the overall clutter in your home or garage.

If all your family’s sports equipment and gear are already threatening to spill out from the closets and have already taken up most of the space in your garage, it may be time to move them to a storage unit with 24-hour access.

With this option, you won’t have to get rid of all the sports items you and your family may need during certain times of the year. You will have access to them anytime you need them as well.

Sports Equipment and Gear Storage Tips

To ensure all the athletic items you will place in your storage unit rental will be in good condition and ready for use when you take them out, follow these tips for prepping and storing them:

1.     Check each item you want to store

The first step to storing all athletic equipment is to inspect each and every one of them.

As you go through all these items, check them for tears, stains, cracks or any damage. Ask your spouse and kids to do the same. If any equipment is too damaged that it can’t be used anymore, make sure they are thrown away.

In case there are items that you or kids don’t like anymore or have outgrown such as uniforms, gloves, shoes, or pads, consider giving them away to other people that may want or need them. Another option would be to donate them.

By taking time to “purge” your athletic stash, you will have fewer items to prepare, pack, transport, and store in your unit. This will, then, help reduce all the work you will put into the whole storing process.

2.     Clean and dry all items

Once you have picked out the items you will store, clean them or launder them before you start packing them away.

Run the uniforms and other fabric gear in the washing machine. For pads, vests, and other fabric-based items that shouldn’t be machine-washed, clean them according to the label instructions.

Make sure you repair damage to any equipment you want to keep as well. Additionally, some equipment or parts may need to be oiled; do this before storing them.

And before you pack these items, make sure they are completely dry. Wet or damp equipment may develop mold or mildew and a musty smell while they are in storage.

3.     Use the right storage solutions

To ensure all your sports equipment will stay clean and protected while in storage, place them in the right containers.

Transparent, airtight plastic containers are great options for storing all your gear. By using these bins, you will be able to see the individual items easily. Don’t forget to label each container with the content so that you can quickly find any item you will need in the future.

For sports balls, regardless of their size and type, store them in stretchable bags. Mesh and laundry bags are your best options.

4.     Choose covers carefully

If you will be storing some bikes or some golf clubs, you have to keep them covered to prevent dust and dirt from settling on them.

However, don’t use plastic to cover them since plastic will allow moisture to settle on the items. The best covering material to use is a plain cotton sheet since it will allow air to circulate in and around the covered equipment.

5.     Organize everything you will store

Lastly, to maximize the available space in your storage unit and have an easier time getting the equipment you will need, create a plan for storing your items.

You can organize these items by sport, season, or equipment type. Keep similar items together so that you won’t have to keep sifting through different containers to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Place the containers and other items that you and others will need or use often in front to save you time when looking for them as well.

As a final tip, make sure you choose the right storage facility for storing your sports equipment. Aside from providing 24-hour access, the storage unit should be air-conditioned or climate controlled. It should have a modern, reliable security system as well.
